Does Sugar Make You Stupid?

While the following study raises some questions as to whether or not sugar can really contribute to stupidity, there’s little doubt in my mind. How can a substance that contributes to insulin resistance, diabetes, fatty liver disease, cancer and obesity not affect the brain negatively as well?

According to a recent UCLA study done with rats, sugar affects the hippocampus area of the brain, affecting memory and altering one’s ability to store and recall information.

The article discusses offsetting over consumption of sugar by increasing omega-3 fatty acids, but why risk harming your brain in the first place?  We all love a nice gooey sweet treat once in awhile, but considering that most Americans consume up to 60 pounds of sugar in some form every year, is eating it on a regular basis a good idea? Why not just cut sugar out of your diet, increase the omega-3s (and get the full benefits of doing so) rather than balancing out the affects of poor eating habits?

Seems like a no-brainer to me…..just say NO to stupidity!
